    Valentines for you, Xanga

There are two feelings I recognize as exhilarating.  The first is love and the second is pride not necessarily in that order.  Include a little of each in your daily routine and see if that doesn’t brighten your smile.

I am watching the Winter Olympics.  Doesn’t it make your heart just about burst when you see the efforts of the athletes?  It makes you feel good to see each of them stretch out  for the pride being at the games brings to their respective countries.  I have a great affection for them all.  Great stuff those Olympic games.  Great stuff those Olympians, win or lose, they are all winners to me.

We are watching some of our favorite “Love Movies” as always.  I hope you will include a bit of “Love on the screen” this week yourself.  Still a favorite, “50 First Dates” and “Sweet Home Alabama” and about a hundred more I could name.  I’m squeezing as many Olympic games and Love filled movies into my Valentine week as I can.

An edit to this Valentine Day entry:  This is a card made totally by me for a photography group I am part of.  I thought I would add it here.  The work is in total my own except for the tiny florets.  I did it in Paint Shop Pro and had a lot of fun doing it.  They aren’t Beverly Sills but they are voicing my sentiments.

    Happy alentines Xanga,

  • Chapter 4 Ashland, Kentucky

Chapter 4, final on Ashland, Kentucky trip.

If text alone could tell the story, my trip to Ashland, Kentucky and our visit with Jim (Wordwarrior39) could be over and done.  The thing is, I’m hooked on photography and the story it tells over and above words.  I have considered you may have to be hooked on my photography to want to view what I post. I hope my pictorial jaunts are considered by those who view as, “worth it”.

Ashland like many cities (Cincinnati, St. Louis, New Orleans, Pittsburgh and more) is all about the river.  These cities, built strategically beside the rivers to inherit the wealth the rivers could bring became populated with people and ideas from all over the globe.  The river is jobs, transportation, shipping, entertainments and wealth as well as the poverty inherent to big cities.  The finest homes built on the hills overlooking a river view are a dream worth dreaming for set apart by their beauty from the filth and lack hidden in the darkest corners of big cities.

My mother was in love with the river.  Her growing up stories and the stories of Mark Twain she read to us each night passed on, to me, her love for the river.  My love lingers in a romantic past with exciting stories of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.  The paddle wheelers and rafts so common at their time are not so common now.  I have been aboard paddle wheelers and viewed some others that ply the rivers.  They are a vacation paradise, an enviable paradise much more so than Ocean liner cruise ships.  Where was my mind when I could have made the river a real part of my vocational inheritance?  There are many today who have done exactly that.

This hill on the left, route 23, winds from the opposite end of Ashland to the bridge you see in the distance in the photo on the right and beyond.  Either leads to the city of Ashland.  Ashland is, by no means, a big city but much larger than where I live.  Ashland has its own bus terminal, big modern motels for visiting businessmen, a once active national guard armory and a very nice University.  The charm of Ashland though is in its past and in the river that runs beside it.  There are some lovely plantings, lovely parks, lovely old homes but if I were to be a permanent part of Ashland, I would want a river view.

Resting out of the reach of strong river currents, a row of barges loaded with coal.  In the brighter light of day you can find views like the one on the right.

Driving the little out of the way roads down to the river you find spots to throw in a line and dilapidated but picturesque fueling stations for the cruisers that frequent the river.

A common river scene, hundreds of these small private boats move up and down as a private entertainment.  Fun loving but the owners of these little boats are huge polluters.  The boats are approaching the ramp just to the right in the photo.  Having walked on the dock I was dumfounded by the trash.  The owners of the boats don’t know the rule “leave a spot cleaner than you found it” but instead trash the river they profess to love so much.  They picnic as they look blindly at the mess they leave behind.  On the right, barges moving south on the river.  It’s a magnificent scene but I am not so naive I don’t realize they are a part of the pollution problem on the rivers.

On the left you see one of the unfortunates that live in all of our cities.  He sleeps under the picnic tables or anyplace he can attempt staying dry.  The open sky is his window, his grocery basket his closet and the river bank his toilet.  It breaks my heart to know how many live in his same conditions.  The only plus I see but he may not agree, he can view scenes like this one on the right anytime he chooses.

I’m not sure what my next blog entry will be.  I have more photos but nothing very different from what you have seen.  Odds and ends will be posted on my photo site when they suit the challenge subject.  See more of my photography on my Xanga, PhotoGraphics, CLICK HERE.

A few spits of snow today but I think 2005 – 2006 Winter may well be the Winter that Winter forgot this year in Ohio.  Mosquitoes will be on a rampage this Summer, 2006.

  • Chapter 3 Ashland, Kentucky

    Chapter 3 photos, Ashland, Kentucky

The route we drove to get to Ashland to visit with Jim (Wordwarrior39) were roads that followed the winding hills that followed the rails that followed the river running between our two states of Ohio and Kentucky. We traveled, North and East on older roads thru small communities that big city people would call forgotten.  There truly are little places that appear as though they may have remained a few years back in time.  It is weren’t for satellite dishes and telephone poles the time suggested would be one I wouldn’t mind going back to.

In sequence, sort of, some nostalgic photos.

This was a beautiful view and brings back a lot of memories of a larger farm where hogs and dairy cattle were raised.  Family reunions were held there every year.  My son spent a summer on it as a child growing up and it was one of his best experience.

A totally different spot on the map.  I couldn’t help myself but had to have the view.

Jim grew up with this theatre and it still operates bringing in new talent as well as well known performers.  The theatre I grew up with has not been as fortunate.   I can’t even find information on the Internet.  It is a storage facility, housing plumbing, I think.  I will have to see if I can’t go into it for photos.  I am sure it is totally not as I remember.

The Paramount sits on a corner and around the corner on the walls of the buildings are murals very well painted and exciting to see as bits and parts of Ashland’s past are depicted.

These beautiful murals are to be found on many buildings and flood walls for miles around.  The past seems to be important enough that someone thinks it worth capturing for everyone to see as they pass.

Take care all.  I am on my second prescription for the stuff I have been harboring.  I hope everyone out there stays well.

  • Chapter 2 Ashland, Kentucky

An upper respiratory infection has managed to catch hold of me once again.  The worst is over and I hope I don’t run headlong into a flu-bug.  Don’t breathe on me please are my thoughts.  I have been very lucky actually and I am so thankful for all of the good in my life.

I did stop at a site to read and Murphy’s laws were listed.  Murphy has been running rampant here.  Now is the time to buy stock in Altoid mints.

Watching a PBS program about boys.  A very informative program any parent should watch.  It’s titled “Raising Cain”.  Not sure of the exactness of one statement but it went something like this.  America leads the industrialized world in fatherlessness.  Doesn’t that just make you proud?

    Enough of that,

I have photos.  I have a thing for trains.  I grew up 4 blocks from the tracks.  I heard every train but lived far enough away that I didn’t feel the thrill of shaking walls.  Sleeping with my window open, I hear a train whistle every morning when I’m not groggy from my cold.  Walking to school as a kid, I stood and watched the trains that rolled by every morning.  I viewed many a train up close and personal and I counted the cars and read the words on their sides.  Cincinnati had a wonderful terminal, now a museum.  I think the museum is great but the terminal and the running trains was a better time.  Click Here for some history.  We have Amtrak but Cincinnati does not ride the rails as it once did.

These photos come from our trip to Jim’s (Wordwarrior39) home town of Ashland, Kentucky.

The proverbial piece of trash.  Ashland or Cincinnati or anywhere else it finds its way from the trashee to the trashed.  I considered cropping the photo but I want that distance shot.  I look down these tracks and the view says freedom, fly away with me.

To get these photos I stumble through rocks and up slopes or whatever.  I love to get angles and verticals and color and a story.  Just past the rail cars is the drop to the river that runs between the banks of the state of Ohio and the Kentucky shore.  Cities, industry, Mark Twain, river barges and Native Americans in birch bark canoes all come to mind.

The no trespassing sign kept me at a distance I preferred not to keep but I was close enough I hope you get a good feel of what I saw by enlarging the photos.  I do just about anything I can to get a shot I want, including nearly standing on my head.

This fellow kept an eye on me or I felt like he was.  Not a word was spoken as he went straight to his work and I to mine.

Jim’s office is just beyond the bridge and down the slope.  The park with it’s boat ramps are just beyond that.  More photos to come.

My mood is shaky.  I finished my html class and finished my graduation lesson with flying colors.  My finished pages had to be up and running and in good order and they were.  I signed up for another class, this time for Cascading Style sheets.  The new class wants me to download a lot of browsers to view pages.  I download 5 besides what I have.  I also have to have an FTP program.  FrontPage has it’s own and I don’t know how to use it though I have used Front Page for a long time.  I have always done my own thing as far as linking and page upload from the site and had fun with it.  Not anymore, I have to learn the FrontPage way of doing things for this new class so I play with it and mess up all of my new pages.  I have them fixed and working again.  I fixed them with FrontPage, hoorah.  The downside, I have a lot of other folders messed up as well.  I guess I’ll learn how to use FrontPage or die trying.  Anyway, If you want to see what I did for my html class pages, see them, named Blossoms pages, CLICK HERE

Always photos on my xanga photo site and they change each week with a challenge I take part in.  See PhotoGraphics, CLICK HERE.

That does it for now, I’m  as fast as I can.

One of the nicest people you might want to meet is Jim, WordWarrior39.  He was high on Terry’s list and on mine, also.  John and I planned the opportunity to meet with Jim in his hometown of Ashland, Kentucky USA in October of 2005.

Sharing just a few of the photos we took.

A grouping that tells the story that Ashland was and is a river town.  Where the river went, the trains followed.
There are indications of the ties between river and rail all along the river in Ashland.

This is Jim’s office.  Tucked away beside the banks of the Ohio and hidden under the bridge and growth,  it’s private.

This is what Jim sees while writing and contemplating in his office.

Jim is a good guide.  We toured the area, the parks, the railroad sidings the historic areas.  The views of the old homes let you know there was  quite a bit of wealth in Ashland.

Among other places, our tour guide took us to, was Carter Caves.  It’s really beautiful.  Sad that you see the lack of respect for what people profess they enjoy so much.  I won’t report what all we saw that makes you wonder about people but be assured it was shameful.

We have ton’s more photos from this trip.  It was a wonderful visit.  Short but wonderful and our visit with Jim was the icing.

Edit … final edit on this blog … the final sign of hacker/terrorist desperation came into my email tonight containing you guessed it, the deletedo virus script and the email reads …

    From: webmaster@aol.com
Subject: Registration Confirmation  NOW THAT OUGHT TO CATCH A FEW FISH … these guys will try anything.

Edits Below in purple and Pink …

Virus Emails, I wanted to write a quick entry … my emails are full of intended virus invasions.  They are coming with all types of subject lines.  I know most of us have good virus protection but just in case, keep careful watch over what you open.  I am getting emails saying I have been sending virus out (which I haven’t), subject lines telling me I am visiting obscene sites and they are watching my whereabouts as if they are the FBI and please visit a particular site to redeem myself, tons of emails  saying my mail hasn’t been delivered and each and every one of these have something to do with infecting my computer.  Take care of your valuables weather they are Dells or PowerSpecs or Apples, no matter they are very important to each of you.  The world would be a better place without the terrorists who try so hard to deceive us into opening those invasive, explosive and hurtful emails.  I keep hoping for the day we are able to blow these nuts out of the water with a growing number of highly sophisticated, increasingly intelligent email receivers and software developed to a stage we won’t have to worry about the fools anymore.

My first virus carrying email for today 12/30/2005, taken from the guts of the email …

Notice the .txt is a change my email provider made to the harmful file which would have been a .exe or possible a .doc and screen saver extensions are often used, a .scr.  I believe there are other file extensions that can carry a virus, also.   The Deletado is an old virus that should be well known by most readers and it is possible it was hiding under another name before it was changed by my provider in the email, I’m not sure.  I can’t imagine anyone opening an attachment with the name of “deletedo”.  Anyway, these fools will do anything to try to get you to open a destructive email.  CAREFUL AND THOUGHTFUL WILL DO YOU A LOT OF FAVORS.  Another virus traveling the net is being carried in an email with the subject line containing the names of two very popular movie stars.  It came in several times yesterday and I expect to see it more than a single time today.  Holidays seem to be a popular time for mice/rats/scum to play.

    *  Follow this link CLICK HERE for a peek at some of the many subject lines that come in to your emails carrying a virus.  Not all are listed.

I hope everyone is enjoying their Christmas season.  Mine, so far, is very hectic.  Today is my birthday, Dec 30 and I am 62.  I didn’t make it this far by being so stupid I would open virus emails from fools.  I hope any reading will foil the idiots as well with good virus protection and good common sense.   I rate common sense high on my list of qualities worth developing.

    Merry Christmas Xanga

Christmas EDIT, I have never witnessed a miracle but that doesn’t mean I don’t believe in them.  The story I am guiding you to is a testimony to a small miracle I thought you would enjoy reading about.  The original link has disappeared so I put it on my own site.  Masters Degree CLICK HERE

The cartoon Ice Age CLICK HERE is one that never caught my interest but it was on television this evening and I watched it and it was captivating.  Very nice little story that fits the season.  I enjoyed it.

Christmas, the season of Giving, Loving, Remembering and Joy if you allow it to filter in.  Merry Christmas and Happy Holy Days to all friends of many faiths celebrating all the Miracles of our existence.  At this time of year I realize Channuka and Kwanzaa celebrations are just around the corner along with Christmas.  Happy Channuka and Happy Kwanzaa also.

Some pages to share AND they are favorites of mine because of QUALITY GRAPHICS, QUALITY PAGE DESIGN and EASE OF NAVIGATION …

For ECards you can’t find a finer artist than JacquieLawson.  From England, she charges a minimal fee for her beautifully animated cards.  If you aren’t familiar with her, you need to check her out.

I also enjoy the cards from RiverSongs animated cards and Care2 is a great place to find cards plus make free donations to help the world and its wildlife and more.  SugarQube, animation cards that are very different, give time for them to load up.  Native American, a simply done, no nonsense ECard site with easy to load ecards.

    Christmas Pages

1- The Biblical Story of Christmas
2- My favorite Spiritual Christmas Card  has SOUND ON ALL
3- My Favorite Nostalgic Christmas Card
4- My favorite fun Christmas Card  and another

For Channuka and Kwanzaa pages I know there are more knowledgeable people within Xanga to guide you but here are links for all about Channuka and Kwanzaa.  The ECard sites I listed do carry cards for these celebrations.

I am no Jacqui Lawson but I enjoy playing with graphics as much as she does AND …

    This may be primitive

but it is a desktop I designed for my family for Christmas.  Click on the graphic to see us up close and personal.  The Nativities are taken from Museum Old Masters works of art.  I sent a modified version to my daughter including her husband’s family and I have uploaded plain ones you can collect and add your families portraits to if you want to.  Click on the size you want to collect, 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768

I am keeping up my photo site.  My photography is important to my well being and the challenge group helps to motivate me.  See a lot of my photography on my PhotoGraphics site.

I hope everyone has wonderful holidays and that each of you stays safe and well.  I am trying to visit but know I will miss some of you and am sorry for that.  Just know I do care about all of your wellbeing.  I try hard to remember so many in one big fell swoop when I am doing my thoughtful thinking.

One more thing, Computers are many things, expensive, exasperating, and at times embarrassing.  I have been embarrassed by a computer breakdown leading to my having to transfer a ton of files to another computer.  The Embarrassing part, this transfer included the importing of my email address book which when done it threw a lot of addresses I had saved but not used into unexpected places I wasn’t aware of until someone I am not necessarily in touch with asked me to please remove them from my address book.  I apologize for my sends to parties unwilling to receive and I have gone thru my book carefully to remove any names I believe probably prefer not to receive my emails.  That should take care of it until the next computer disaster.

  • Merry Christmas Xanga
    I receive a pass-along email every year.
I have written a similar letter
in the way I felt one should be written.

    His
    Birthday  Invitation
    My Way

The best of birthday parties is nearing.  The excitement of people shopping for gifts is in the air and His birth date is being announced by all media, worldwide.

This birthday and its remembrance began years ago. People understood then and were  thankful for, His greatest gift to them but now, when family and friends get together for this party, so many don’t know “the why” for the celebration.

Every year there are feasts, decorations and gift giving. Amazingly, this birthday celebration begun in Christ’s name and given Christ’s name “Christmas” is no longer recognized by the givers of the parties, as a party for Him.  He was in years past the guest of honor but He is now forgotten so much of the time that His invitation isn’t sent.  When the day arrives, the door is often closed with no admittance for Him.

Not invited? He sees all.  He sees people eating, drinking and joking.   He sees Santa’s dressed in red and children rushing with squeals of ”Santa Claus”!   He sees gifts shared and opened with great expectation. He sees friends greet and hug and He waits with arms extended to all but He knows His hugs may not come.  Every year things deteriorate.  People party and give gifts but fewer are remembering Him.  His story is slowly becoming forgotten and pushed from our minds by retailers hell-bent on selling and by non believers who prefer we would lose our faith treating the “Greatest Story Ever Told” as a myth.

Christmas!  I would like the Christmas celebration restored as it should be.  Won’t you allow Him to enter your Christmas celebration as well as your life?

He came to this world almost two thousand years ago, gave His life for yours, on a pain filled cross. Today, what He wants is a renewed belief in Him.

Is His story (Click Here) so impossible to believe?  The Biblical Story of his birth, unlike what so much of history has reduced it to, is filled with the greatest of gifts; love, forgiveness of sin and everlasting life.  Is that perspective less exciting than other stories of super heroes fighting the good fight?  He is, after all, ”a super hero” more-so than those we are made aware of in movies we view.  No, He is not a Batman but, He is “Salvation”.

He, is today, trying to make His own party arrangements and everyday He is extending an open invitation to each of us.  Our names are on His list of expected guests.  My hope is we will all consider His invitation and attend.  Attend with me not just on Christmas day but during the whole season of Christmas and throughout the coming years, His celebration.  Answer Him by extending His invitation to others.  He continues His wait for each of us.

He loves us all.  He wants this world to come to the re-realization of Him knowing it can be a much better place if we utilize the Creators few and simple best teachings.  If you can’t believe in Him, believe in the ancient teachings.  Anyone with common sense can read and see the brilliance in the words.

Today is the first day of the rest of our lives, possibly trite but always true.

    God Bless Us Everyone!

We have lost a few, won a few and we continue trucking along and hopefully remembering those who need remembering.

We have begun our Christmas celebration.  Our Christmas events will include, good food, good movies, good visits with family and friends.  We will fill the coffers of the money grubbers as little as possible, sending what we can afford, instead, to the Katrina fund.  I hope everyone reading will include those who have lost so much in your Christmas list of giving.

Gifts for everyone reading and don’t wait till Christmas to open.  One gift for each of the 12 days of Christmas given in the true spirit of Christmas .  I have tried all the links.  If they don’t work we may be using up their bandwidth so try them again.  I may have given some of these gifts in the past but quality is quality and worth giving more than a single time.

    A couple of notes:

Three of Terry’s sites are now lifetime paid in full.  MoreThanJustCrabs was paid for by a friend who prefers to remain anonymous and I paid for the two I wanted to remain ad free, The Clowne from Clown and LordPineapple.  They all have memorials posted on them.

I am trying to keep up my photo site.  If you care to view go to PhotoGraphics.

An EDIT:  I don’t do well with games but I have been tagged to play by a Xangan I like very much, jeepind so, I’ll play.

1- I am to list 5 weird things about myself and if you knew me you would know I’m not weird, I’m just differant, all the time.  My serious side wants to come out in this game but as it’s Christmas, I’ll think of 5 really strange things.

a- I could eat Cincinnati Chili every day of the week.  I love Skyline, Frishes, Bob Evans, and quite a few other Chili’s from our area.  I prefer it without beans but with cheese and fresh chopped onion, no spegetti.

b- I am an unlucky person, never having won anything, only earned rewards thru work or study.  I have never received anything of value for nothing discounting family gifts.

c- I am overweight but a picky eater.  I don’t care a lot for most desserts or ice creams and I don’t eat things of any kind that I don’t like.  I am a fair cook, could have been a very good cook, was raised around a grandmother who was a fine cook so know what good food tastes like.  That may be why I am picky.  My feelings, Most prepared for you foods need a lot of doctoring to be worth the eating.

d- I wear open toed thongs, flip-flops all year round and am happy doing it until someone seems to think they should study the situation they think is really weird.  I doubt I’ll ever get an invitation to the White House.  If I do, I am positive my dress code may not be in keeping with theirs.  I’m a very comfortable person and like it that way.

e- I think it’s great there are exciting risk takers in the world that can show me how much possibly un-enviable common sense I have.  I would love to win a million dollars but would never do 99 percent of what contenders do, on the TV shows, to win the money.

The Rules of this game:  1-List on your site 5 weird or strange things about yourself.  2-List 5 Xangans to do the same.  3-List the rules of the game on your site so those you have tagged can read them.  4-Go to the sites of the 5 you have tagged to let them know they have been tagged.  So many of you have been tagged before, forgive please my tagging anyone to play.  As I said, I don’t do this kind of thing well.   flaminredhead, knightingale, MyKi_Whatzerface, The_Queen_Of_Swords , Tooty I have picked all of the above as they are sweet people who may not mind my intrusion in their lives, yet I know how busy each of them is.

Keeping Christ in Christmas and sending much affection your way during this glorious season,
