  • November, the Thankful Month

    Veteran’s Day Edit below.

I have no idea where your year went to but mine has flown about as fast as a year can fly.  I am ready for Thanksgiving.  It’s that time again and though Christmas is not far away, the stores have already gotten on my nerves.  I am never ready for Christmas music and Christmas trees fully decorated by the end of September.  Money, money, money is all stores can think of.  Quit pushing me, already!!!

Some photos I don’t think you have seen.  Sort of a review of my SO exciting life this year.

    Thankful-1January-2007SFr_RSBlain.jpg

January 2007, we were just home from our Christmas trip to Virginia.  A message on our phone told us we would start our new year with a funeral on the fifth.  So many of our family members are buried in the frozen cold of January.  This photo taken from inside my car while driving express way speeds shows you the typical January funeral dreary skies.  Notice the flag flying half mast in honor of the life of President Gerald Ford who passed on December 26, 2006.

    Thankful-2-FebruarySnIce-2007SFr_RSBlain.jpg

February 2007 and its cold, snowy, icy and I have a dentist appointment the day of this photo.  My whole world looks like this and by evening, we will have an ice storm that lasts for days.  Highly unusual for our neck of the woods as it usually melts off in hours.

    Thankful-3-March-2007SFr_RSBlain.jpg

March 2007, the sun still shines.  It’s the weekend and we are out and about for dinner at Appleby’s, groceries and other necessities.  This photo is taken from the parking lot of John’s work as he had to stop to update time cards.  I get some nice sunset shots while waiting.

    Thankful-4-April-2007SFr_RSBlain.jpg

April 2007, our year isn’t all funerals after all.  My nephew’s wedding and it’s supposed to be a nice sunny Spring day.  The wedding is beautiful and the food is really yummy (I love Italian Wedding soup) but Baby It’s COLD Outside.  The date is April 27 and we drive home in snow flurries.

    Thankful-5-May-2007SFr_RSBlain.jpg

May 2007 and there are some really nice days for visiting the local parks.  Lake Isabella is always waiting for us and it’s so close, we go often.

    Thankful-6-June-2007SFr_RSBlain.jpg

June 2007 and we make it to Lake Isabella for photos as well as the nice outdoor dinner they serve on Friday nights.  We bring a good neighbor/friend who enjoys this park as much as we do.

    Thankful-7-July-2007SFr_RSBlain.jpg

July 2007 we have company, our daughter Halie.  We visit places I grew up to take photos and reminisce.  There is a big change in this little park which sits at the end of my tiny growing up street.  The big Sycamore tree I played under is still there and I really like getting photos of it.

    Thankful-8-August-2007SFr_RSBlain.jpg

August 2007 and we enjoy a little spot near us for a meal.  We have managed to get my sister and my daughter here but so far not Halie’s complete family.  We know Mitch would enjoy seeing it and the good food which leans vegetarian and is made using fresh garden ingredients from the restaurant’s own garden.

    Thankful-9b-September-2007SFr_RSBlain.jpg

September 2007 and John and I have come back to my little growing up park.  I wanted more photos but we are going to have to come back again.  The light isn’t the best.

    Thankful-9-September-2007SFr_RSBlain.jpg

    Another from the same day.

    Thankful-10-October-2007SFr_RSBlain.jpg

October 2007 and we are running around for Pumpkin photos.  This one is taken at Kleather’s Pumpkin Patch in Springboro, Ohio.  This little guy came in with his family and he just waltzed over, grabbed a wagon and began filling it with the pumpkins he saw that caught his eye.  He was so cute and before he managed to pull the wagon away from the pile he had 8 or 9 in the wagon.   I think it was such a smart move.  The boy was totally happy loading up the wagon and Mom and Dad could load what they wanted into another wagon.  Keep em happy is a good motto especially when you need to concentrate on your own shopping.

    Thankful-11-November-2007SFr_RSBlain.jpg

November 2007 and I haven’t been out for photos.  This photo is one I contrived for a challenge at the WeeklyPhotoChallenge pages.  The subject was “Chocolate”.  I think it foretells of the good food and goodies at Thanksgiving and during the Christmas holidays.

An edit for Veterans Day, Be THANKFUL and Remember our military.
November 11, 1921, the first Armistice Day was celebrated, marking the end of World War I.  The fighting ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.  In 1954 President Eisenhower broadened the Armistice Day celebration into Veteran’s Day, a day to pay tribute and honor to all American soldiers who served in the United States Armed Forces.

It’s been a crazy year when you speak of weather.  There are still a lot of trees with leaves in them, our fall color hasn’t been terrific but pumpkins did well.  They are so gloriously orange and gold.  We have plans to visit my sister for Thanksgiving.  If gasoline gets too much to handle, we will spend it on food and movies.  It all works for me.

As I scroll through the photos I have posted I have to say it has been a good year.  Even death can’t dampen it nor the drought.  I’m still alive and enjoying and can’t ask for a lot more.  I am truly thankful.

Hoping everyone reading had a year as blessed as mine has been.
    Till the next time,

    Becca

  • Pumpkin time in Cinci _ LE

It was a gorgeous weekend in Cinci.  The temperature was perfect both days.  It was sunny and the sky was the blue a sky should be.  We took advantage of both days enjoying seasonal events.  We decided on a little Pumpkin festival not far from us.

We drove just outside of Milford, Ohio to Shaw Farms.  The field was filled with cars.  In the pumpkin areas, there was a lot of serious pumpkin shopping going on.

    Some photos

    Pumpkin_BuyThisOne9_RSBlain.jpg

Shoppers in all sizes were shopping for the pumpkins.

    Pumpkin_BuyThisOne3_RSBlain.jpg

Pumpkins weren’t exactly flying out the door but arms and carts were filled with them.

    Pumpkin_BuyThisOne11_RSBlain

You just wade around through the piles and when you find the right one, hoist it up.  I think he has about 6 of them in the wheelbarrow.

    Pumpkin_BuyThisOne10_RSBlain.jpg

I had one picked out but he isn’t so sure about getting it home and just where are we going to put it? he is thinking.  My argument … but it’s so pretty.

Pumpkins were in piles everywhere all over the grounds and displays were filled and what can be more fun than patting and feeling and lifting

I loved seeing these crates filled with pumpkins of mixed sizes.

It’s no secret I’m a fan of pumpkins.  I like to eat them, carve them and take photos of them.  My hope is you enjoy my efforts which include them.

    Have a great week,

  • Waldschmidt House _ LE

Two weekends ago John and I spent time with one of Xanga’s very talented Photographers and extremely nice person, Sparkling_Rainbow .  We had dinner at the Schoolhouse Restaurant, took photos of the grounds, talked a lot and then proceeded to the Waldschmidt House, just down the road, where we again had our camera’s out.  Waldschmidt House is a beautiful Civil War era stone house located in Camp Dennison a Civil War Union Army Campground.  The Waldschmidt House was part of a large parcel of land purchased by the Cincinnati Kroger family but passed to the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) with funds for historic renovation.  The DAR renovates historic properties and then opens them to the public for viewing promoting the memory of American History.  Waldschmidt House and its grounds are not as prestigious as some old plantation estates but it is another spot I could be happy owning.  The construction is stone and the rooms have large old fireplaces including the kitchen with large hearth.  The DAR labels its architecture as Pennsylvania Dutch.  It is in fact of the same design as the house I grew up in but in much better condition and scenic placement.  Even so, I know the history my old home could relate, if able to talk, would be very much the same.

    Waldschmidt1_RSBlain.jpg

    Waldschmidt House, Front View

    Waldschmidt5_Reading_RSBlain.jpg

The house I grew up in on Vine street in Reading, front view and brick, not stone.  There have been many changes to it and most were, poorly planned.  NOTICE THOUGH, the plan is exact to that of the Waldschmidt House though some of the windows on the north side have been boarded up.

    Waldschmidt2_RSBlain.jpg

Waldschmidt House Front to left side

    Waldschmidt6_Reading_RSBlain.jpg

Vine Street home, front to left side view.  My house was not as large, inside, as the Waldschmidt Home.  Notice the right side up and down were outdoor sitting porches.  Very nice in the Summer but useless in the Winter months.  The original rooms in the house consisted of 2 large rooms upstairs with a small hall between where the stairs led down to the first floor.  The bathroom was also on the second floor and I imagine the footage used for it would have been a part of a larger, original, second bedroom.  I have no idea when the bath and plumbing were put into the house but think it would not have been built as part of it and the grounds would have had an outhouse.  The bottom floor was two large rooms, a living or sitting room and a large eat in kitchen.  The hall was between, same as above, and the center door, groundfloor, outside, was the entrance to the home through the hall area.  There was also an entrance, groundfloor from the porch then thru the kitchen.  I also want to mention the windows.  The original windows in our house were exactly like those in the Waldschmidt House.  Many small panes in each and in the Winters, they frosted over as there was no double panes.  The rooms were cold but the windows were a wonder of frosted fairy lands.  There is a full basement underneath the home and an attic for air space only.

    Waldschmidt3_RSBlain.jpg

The small building to the right of the Waldschmidt home in this photo is a Spring House.  The home also has its herb garden and there are some other buildings on the grounds, some original and some reproduction.  The similarities between my home and the above don’t show beyond the first two photos.  I am sure due to the era my home also had an herb garden and its share of small or large farm animals.  I know it had a well for water as it stands covered with a cement slab and it had a chicken house we used as a play house, long gone.

    Waldschmidt4_RSBlain.jpg

Our house did have its big lazy trees, a grape arbor which was loved by me but torn down in time as a nuisance.  Mentioning here, tours are available in the house but, NO PHOTOS ALOUD. We weren’t in the mood for inside as it was so hot but as it’s been years since I was inside I’d love to see it again.  If I do, I’ll be sure to write a decent description.

  • Reporting in … LE

Hmmmmmm 3 weeks since my last entry.

I have been busy, reading, writing and rithmitic, personal time, sudoku, photography and trying out new restaurants.  Last week an Indian Restaurant meaning India.  I know their cuisine can be wonderful.  Not this spot, everything prepared and tasting the same, all very hot with red curry.  I like curry but I also like variety.  We won’t try it again and am sure they won’t last.

1- I have been updating the Friendship Indiana site I built for them.
2- I am trying to update my photo xanga regularly meaning weekly as the weekly challenge are given plus a couple of extras from monthly challenges.
3- Microsoft Word and Publisher:  My sister Jeanne does a lot of writing having some published work concerning Alzheimer’s care givers and also Christianity.  I am working on one of her projects with her.  She does the writing and I am supposed to do the publishing preparations meaning using Microsoft Publisher and Word.  Not being as knowledgable as I’d like to be with those programs I am having to do some learning and am using a few words Jeanne wouldn’t approve of.  What she wants is half size pages printing 4 pages on a sheet using the front and back so it comes out about the size of a greeting card.  Unless I find a template for exactly that I am in for a lot of work.  Thanking God it isn’t one of her big projects.
4- Xanga comments, I do comment here and there.  I apologize for missing someone who thinks I shouldn’t.

  • After the Labors of Labor Day_LE

     Bold Paragraph Titles
    skip the information
    you consider very boring.
    I like that.

My mind has gone blank.  It’s still too hot in Cinci for me.  The heat has fried my brain and is working on the rest of me.  I could be a really good pig roast.  We were supposed to get some rain last night but it passed us by, again.  I see no indication of rain outside my door, anywhere.  We are in a drought, the grass is brown and brittle.  Lots of trees appear to be dying and other things including myself.  I am drinking lots of water as I have been having some of my worst headaches.  Dehydration can cause headaches.  I should be drinking GatorAde but I prefer water.

Struggling with what to write, since the day after labor day.  Hey, I do the same things over and over, day after day so what’s to write about?

Books:  I am rereading “Trinity” by Leon Uris.   It’s an excellent evaluation of the trials and tribulations put upon Ireland by England.  I will never understand the situation but I keep trying.  All nations do, have done, continue to do what isn’t right to other people/nations.  Well researched books tell me a lot.  Leon Uris and James Michener are favorite authors as they do fenatical researching for their books.

Movies:  Television is out except for a few favorites,  Bones,  House,  Boston Legal, and  Numbers.  Throw in a few competition types,  Hells Kitchen, Smarter than a 5th Grader, So You Think You Can Dance, and American Idol pretty much in that order.  That averages a little more than a program a night plus or minus good PBS.  I don’t turn the TV on till 8:00 evenings and some days it doesn’t go on at all.  A good movie is a different story and I continue to watch a movie or two in a week and I continue to purchase always watching for good comedy.  Some older funnies in my collection I really like, “What About Bob“, “Troop Beverly Hills“, “Short Circuit“.  Cute stories, feel good endings, honest laughs and no blood and guts.

Sudoku update:  I have made a breakthrough on Sudoku and know I am going to turn into an outright whiz given time.  I am not working for speed, I am working for a finish of a puzzle and have improved dramatically, enough to ask him to pick me up the two next stages to try off and on between the easies.  I may kick off before I can do the hardies but I won’t not having tried.  Persevere is my middle name.

Crossword Puzzles:  I have never liked puzzles.  I’m lousy with them so a clue why I don’t like them.  As I am enjoying Sudoku puzzles so much, which is hard to believe given the afore mentioned bit of trivia, I decided I need even more variety in brain stimuli, so I have been considering crossword puzzles.  I need something simple a fried brain can work with.  I know crosswords will be more of a challenge than Sudoku.  I like word games, scrabble, boggle and have felt I have a reasonable command of words but Crossword Puzzles???  SCARES ME A LITTLE LOT.

Goldfish:  Actually black fish as those I have are Black Moors.

    Goldfish_BlackMoor

My longest lived fish kicked the bucket in this heat a couple of weeks ago.  It left a survivor who now has two more like itself swimming around.  I hate to see them die.  You can’t even eat them so total wastes of little lives.  Anyway, our set up is pretty good, now.  The filter we have is terrific over and above what they first sell to you knowing you will come back and spend more money to replace the first purchase.  NEVER FORGET, Shops and in fact all business are in it for the money.  The more replacements because of the first crap they insisted you purchase makes them more money.  As far as knowledge goes, practical experience tells you a lot as well as reading ie, example 1:  from kokosgoldfish.com  The black moor is not doing too good in a pond, but will be a very happy fish in an aquarium.  Example 2:  Animal World tells me this:  The Black Moor Goldfish is one of the few fancy goldfish, along with the Fantail, that are considered suitable for beginners and can be kept at temperatures close to freezing.  Is there a hint here per confusion from supposed professionals when it comes to selling you fish and appliances?  If they don’t get it, how are you ever going to?

An OPINION brought on from the loss of mucho dinero for computer related items.  The Computer business is the worst when it comes to thieves in business.  Dried up ink and many printers biting the dust, expensive ones not to mention the downright  high tech high quality workmanship put into the computers you buy and the wonderful help files for learning plus all else you go through.  (a bit of sarcasm for you in that statement)

Photography:  John and I spent labor day driving the Appalachian highway.  Ohio has lovely hills and most of the really hilly stuff is not in Cincinnati.  The challenge I do with photos wanted hills.  I posted the shots I had but wanted more so the particular drive.  We enjoyed it getting more than we went for in interesting photos.  Speaking of the challenge, it would be updated this morning.  It’s “Feet”, always a fun subject and I’ve been working on photos/graphics I want to post for “Feet” and should have finished it last night.  As I said, my brain is fried, I forgot today is Friday so I will be a late poster, once again, for the challenge.  “thank you God for digital photography” a saving grace for computing but another big stab at taking your money and the camera mfg. do TAKE IT.  Did you know camera lenses cost as much and more than the camera you buy?  And, did you know the mfg. want you to discard the camera you buy this year for the new one they put out next year?  Same as computers?  My Halie, by the way is doing some learning with her fine camera and Eden is more creative than ever with her photos.  See samples on Halie’s site.

Family:  they are there and we are here.  One of my quotes, “Family divided becomes more acquaintance in the time continuum.  To continue as real family, real contact is imperative.  The world is losing sight of real family.”  RSBlain

(computers do help in the area of keeping contact with family.  Chalk one biggie up for computers.  WHOOPS, that works for terrorists too, scratch the word biggie.)

    A Poem

    Photography
    © RSBlain September 7, 2007

I travel out to photograph hills and lakes and trees
And any creature I might see from cows to honey bees
I notice clouds and sunsets and groups of passers by
Anything to satisfy my camera wielding eye
I photo shoot my food on plates, tables and decor
Always with my hungry eye studying for more
To compose with shutter’s flash and all the little clicks
My hopes for something wonderful in my resulting pics

    Till the next time,
    Becca

  • I do some of the dumbest with a capitol D, things _ LE

I do some of the dumbest with a capitol D, things.

Usually, I do learn from them

My latest DUMB occurred only a short while ago on my PhotoGraphics site.

A TUTORIAL:  Tags are fairly new to Xanga.  It’s a really nice feature and one I am editing into some of my past entries.  Tags help the reader and the writer, ME, to find entries more easily if I or they want something particular on the site.  OKAY, so I am editing tags into an older entry and I did a save at the top of the editor as I was not sure the new tag would save if I just clicked the entry back in.  When I hit the top save icon, the bottom area near where it says “SAVE CHANGES” sort of layered up.  Now, when it does this LAYERING UP which I have seen before, I click inside the text area of my editor and the layered look disappears but NOOOOOOOOO, I didn’t follow my procedure, not this time.  I ignored the layered look and just clicked it in.  Well, at the same time, I sent the entry back into my site, my cursor must have slid into the update the time and date box so, the entry I only wanted to edit a tag into now had a new date and time WHICH can not be changed backwards.  The “not meant to be updated” entry also attached itself to my newest entry which is what happens if you write more than a single entry in a day which I seldom do.  SOOOOOOOO, I had to update the newest entry with a new time and date as it was posted only last night and I wanted it back at the top of my page.  I have already checked with John of Xanga and he tells me, “there is no way to backdate page entries” which I already new but thought I’d act the royal pain anyway, trouble him and ask.

*B-U-M-M-E-R* but, I won’t forget the lesson (I hope) if the layered look is at the bottom of the editor, click in the text / typing area to clear the layering before sending the entry in.  END OF TODAY’S LESSON / TUTORIAL!

    Moral of the above,
“Lessons are remembered more vividly when they involve some pain”

I don’t often include someone else work or emails but this is one of the best so I am posting it

    FOR A FRIEND

*A group of alumni, highly established in their careers, got together to visit their old university professor. Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life.

Offering his guests coffee, the professor went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups; porcelain, plastic, glass, crystal, some plain looking, some expensive, some exquisite, telling them to help themselves to the coffee.

When everyone had a cup of coffee in hand, the professor said: “Notice all the nice looking expensive cups are taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress.

Be assured that the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. In most cases the beautiful cup is expensive and in some cases even hides what we drink.

What all of you really wanted was coffee, not the cup, but you consciously went for the best cups And then you began eyeing each other’s cups.

Now consider this: Life is the coffee.  The jobs, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold & contain Life, the type of cup we have does not define, nor change the quality of life we live.

Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the coffee provided us. The real provision for your pleasure is the coffee, not the cups.”

“The happiest people don’t always have the best of everything. They make the best of everything they have.”

I have a lot of new photos on my PhotoGraphics site.  Some of it is wild and crazy as the photo challenges dictate what and how I decide to post.  If you don’t scroll the pages you miss some of the good stuff along with the foolishness which is “good stuff”.

    WP_MagnifBuilding-3
One of our photo challenge involved buildings.  This is a collage I used in that challenge.  The views are from four separate photos stretching from Ohio to the Atlantic Ocean in Virginia.  1024 x 768

I can not say I am never envious of the lifestyle some people lead.  Having kept up with the realities in this world, I know even the rich and famous have problems.  During the stock market crash of years past, many chose suicide, leaping from buildings, not seeing any reason for living other than what they had amassed then lost in material wealth and debt.

You will like this great little CBS link I discovered called “world fast facts”:  I grabbed the link off the pop up.  Play with it, there is a lot hidden that may be of interest.   http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs/world_country_facts/framesource_country_facts.html

It’s hotter than Hades here.  Near feinting hot, you could cook an egg on the sidewalk most of this past week and there is more to come.  I am staying near my air conditioner, floor model that needs to be emptied of water about every two to three hours.  I am drinking a lot, eating too much even with the heat, watching movies, computing and playing Sudoku.  I dropped Sudoku for a while knowing I could come back and play possibly better.  I can tell you I still can’t do the hard ones.  I tried to fill a puzzle out the other day in my old book and couldn’t get past 2 numbers entered.  That game can really make me feel stupid.  I still have goldfish.  One is dying as of this week due to an aquarium that is too warm.  The heat can kill anything, anytime, anywhere.  Stay cool and drink a lot of water.

    Have a great week,
    Becca

  • Miles Levin

I learned about Miles Levin through keeping in touch with Periculosus_Z.  I have been following Miles blog since that time.  Miles was the victim of rhabdomyosarcoma, a killing cancer that strikes the youth of the world.  It is a very rare form reaching into and killing about 350  250 children a year.  It took Miles early this morning.

Miles, knowing he was dying at his youthful age of 18, gave positive proofs to the world he was an amazing kid.  He made his strengths known to the world thru his blogs, writing to help others suffering similar cancers.  You can learn a little of who and what Miles was as a person by following links below taken from the Levin’s local Internet news.
