Recap: Thanksgiving 2007_LE
My camera, I never leave home without it.
Some photos from our Thanksgiving getaway.
Many of our drives to Rockford are in the rain but this type of weather is perfect for Thanksgiving. Our day is usually begun late as he works till the wee hours of the morning. We just go with the flow of the wet weather. Here, it looks the proper part for the Thanksgiving holiday. I have no problem enjoying the moment and clicking away attempting to catch the seasonal atmosphere. The FedX truck appeared at the proper moment, a reminder holiday shipping is happening.
This is Thanksgiving day on our way to a beautiful White Pines Deer Park lodge for dinner. As you can see in the photo, the rain changed to snow. It was cold outside but we were cozy in the car on the drive.
This is the lodge and Christmas welcomed us to the Thanksgiving feast.
The park and the lodge are beautiful. Our table seated about 24 people who were in our party and the photos from it weren’t much so I took some after our meal to show the dining area. It was nice, the food was good and the people were pleasant and filled with the holiday spirit.
After dinner we shopped the gift shop at the park leaving with our goodies in the dark of night. On our drive back to Bunny’s house, we drove through this little town and the main square was surrounded with life size greeting cards made by every business and organization in the town. It was quite nice to see the display of cards realizing the whole town had taken part in the effort.
On Friday, I think it was, we drove to Dekalb, Ill. This is Portillos and they make a really fine sandwich. They also have some fun display and we hid our eyes from the view of the nekid guy in the tub. We did a lot of things in our short time in Rockford. We visited some shops I loved and can’t tell you who or what as they didn’t have Internet sites. What they did have were some items I wish I could have come home with but I learned a long time ago, you can’t have everything you want. Maybe the next time.
This is the windfarm we see on our trip home each time we travel to Rockford. I have taken photos before and they are always lousy. We stopped in the area for another try and though the light is lousy “again” I took some of my best photos of it to date.
We left the highway trying for better photos than I usually came home with. I am really pleased with some of the scenes as the windfarm is of interest and I love pastoral farming scenes. I loved this farm and the farmer is obviously forward looking as his acreage is filled with the windmills (he probably does get a fee for rental of the land space and may in fact, own all of the installations).
Another shot with the windmills peeking from behind the buildings.
You have to study this photo to get the big picture of the size of these windmills. Notice the full size crane at the base and at the base of the crane is a full sized tractor trailer. Huge isn’t a big enough word.
Hedgeapples are some of the original natural fencing used in the early frontier, for livestock. I learned this from reading on the Internet. I grew up with a Hedgeapple tree just a few doors from our house. They were a curiosity I have never forgotten and to find them to photograph is fun. The tree I knew is still in the same spot at home. I need to take photos of it.
So many of my shots are taken through the car window as we travel. This one turned out pretty well as we were moving expressway speeds when he said, private planes in the field coming up.
Not a very colorful photo but filled with nostalgia. These old farms are always a grabber for my eyes and I hope to find a lot of them to take photos of. Most of the landscapes now have cellphone towers sitting on them.
Our arrival back home in Cincinnati was timed the same as it had been to Rockford, just nearing midnight. We had such a good time with my sis and my photos always make the adventures worth more.
I hope all of you had a great few days building your store of good memories. We did and I’ll share more of ours with photos when the time is right.

Wonderful pics, thanks for sharing! Have wonderful holidays.
blessings,

I feel as if I’ve had a mini-break with you ! Lovely photos and description of your Thanksgiving, thank you. I’m not keen on wind farms as they do ” mess up ” the counrtyside and I’m not sure they are producing much power.

I just realized I hadn’t seen this post. It looks like you had a good visit in Rockford and got to do some fun stuff. The restaurant looks like a good time.
such a beauty your blog! I like Egypt and I read a comment of yours, that’s why I stopped by. take good care!
I am a city boy, born and bred, yet getting out into the country restores my spirits. Beautiful pictures Becca.
We go to visit our daughter in Greeley once a month and often take a byway along the trek to see farm life off the main highway.
Love Halies pictures, hope she finds much business and gains enthusiasts therefrom.
Thanks for sharing the pictures! I love the giant windmills. I was fascinated with them in Lubbock area. Halie is turning into a wonderful photographer, isn’t she? Just so lovely… Those lifesized cards are really cool. Have a great rest-of-the-weekend!
Thank you! Looks like you had a funfilled break… I didn’t realise there were such things as wind farms until last summer. We took a road trip to Cali, and on the way back we past tons of them. I was amazed…
Can’t understand why I did not comment on this, pretty positive I had done, cause I can remember linking to Halie’s site from here. Anyway my apologies and this is what I meant to say. I love the colours in the design they are really nice. Is it any wonder some of us don’t want themes. Whose trying to hide her face behind a bag. The decor is a bit unsual to say the least – a guy having a bath of all things. We have those wind farms over here too.
Well, it looks like you had a great time. We got a tiny TINY bit of snow the other morning, but it didn’t last 10 minutes.
You capture the world so beautifully… sorry I’ve been “AWOL,” but – ah well, life… great to stop by and visit – and, thanks for asking…
The country side looks a bit like the ours in Picardy even with windmills .
it ‘ s good idea to take pictures step to step during your trip . This gives an idea of the landscape around you .
The lodge is especially heartwarming . It feels good .
Thanks for sharing this
Love
Michel
