  • National Geographic Online

I have a deep affection for National Geographic.   They feature some of the best Magazines for relating what goes on in this world be it ecological or political and they do it in text highlighted with some of the world’s best photography.   Their TV scheduling is stunning as well as informative, their photography to die for, their news enlightening, their Internet videos are outstanding and they have an online store for just about everything pertaining to what they do.

Some National Geographic links  Pointer_finger to things I have been reading and viewing this weekend.  It will take about 8 minutes total for this list of three.  A well spent 8 minutes.

    Environmental crisis:
    1-VIDEO
: National Geographic:  Africa’s Mt Kilimanjaro.  Other environmental links , a huge list, can be found here on National Geographic.

    Conflict in Africa:
    2-VIDEO
: National Geographic:  Darfur, Divided by Ethnic Conflict

3-NEWS ARTICLE:  National Geographic:   “Hotel Rowanda, the Hero Who Fought Genocide”  Follow this link:  articles and video about Darfur listing about 136 more National Geographic entries for Darfur.

An IMDB link: to, “Hotel Rwanda“.  If you haven’t seen the 2004 movie click on the link to check out the review.  There are always ratings and reviews on the movie pages and the review is towards the bottom of the page for any title you might decide to search for.

The National Geographic links above are only a taste of the fine writing, photography and videos on their pages.

A lot of great links to follow for Harry Potter, be sure to scroll DOWN the page to find the info :   Latest on Harry Potter book and more

I would so love to do this (Harry Potter Knight Bus, June library visits USA) but the closest is 5 hours away, in unfamiliar territory and the time schedule is limited.  I am feeling a little too old to think I could fight a crowd of fans.  I sent the Knightbus schedule to Halie and Eden and they plan on attending in the DC area as it is happening after school is out and before Eden’s trip to her Student Leadership Conference.  I got even more excited than I was just thinking they will be going to meet up with it.

    Have a great week,

    Becca

  • fantastic cat pix…

have you seen the Google Earth feature on Darfur? It is a brilliant teaching tool…

  • to thenarrator, we do have Google Earth and I was reading about how to use it as a tool to see what has been burned out and destroyed.  I haven’t done it yet but will turn it on now to check it out.  Thanks for the reminder.

About the cat pix, my friend enjoys taking photos of his pets, cat and a dog, and sends them to me to play with.  I’m fortunate to have friends who share photos with me for my use but I do work on them also say for instance a lot of white eyes from the flash.

  • Well you have hit on a real love of mine, because I adore cats.

  • LOL!  I have to laugh whenever I think of National Geographic—the magazine, that is.  We subscribed for many years.  But that is not what makes me laugh.  Back in the late 70′s and early 80′s, when I was a library assistant at our Lutheran high school, I would always have to check the new NG when it came in.  I learned that if there were any pictures with topless women—-like from African or South America tribes—-I would have to keep it behind the desk, or those pictures would “mysteriously” disappear from the magazine.  If anyone wanted to look at it, they had to sign for it, and it would be checked over when they returned it.  That probably wouldn’t happen anymore–not with internet porn so easily available!!

The kitty pictures are so cute.  There are several Xanga buddies who have lost their dear pets recently.  It kind of makes me glad we cannot have pets here.  Did enough mourning over my kitties who either died or disappeared.

  • Google Earth is quite amazing, it is such a teaching tool, and I use it to help kids “break out” of their neighborhoods and write about places they otherwise cannot quite imagine…

Which reminds me that I have to get back to building my “Naming the World” map, whch tries to let kids know the “real” names of nations.

  • Last night on “Are you Smarter than a 5th Grader”, one of the questions was “In what continent is Mt. Kilimanjaro”?  Both the contestant and the classmate said “Asia”.  They should have visited your site!!!
